Heavy equipment would tear a large fire line around the buildings. If the machinery doesn't pulverize delecate pottery or crumbling foundations, summer thunderstorms and flash floods might wash the lost Anasazi culture down the blackened hillsides. It would be an extraordinary step in what is essentially a living museum. No excavations -- preservation only -- is the rule at Mesa Verde. "Sometimes fire suppression activities do more damage than fire itself." -- Trinkle Jones, National Park Service Western Archaeology and Conservation Center
Events of note Soukiini, the annual fundraising event of the Mesa Verde Foundation, was held on September 9, 2006. Please visit our Events page for further information.
